In most demolition derbies about 1/3 of the cars will fallout in the first 5 to 10 minutes. Of these, most will be due to poor preparation. This is the time to drive defensively, make some good hits if you have a chance, but try not to take too many.
No sandbagging. Its unfair to the other competitors, and besides your here to have some fun beating the heck out of the other guys car. Right?
After the first 5 to 10 minutes many of the other cars will have dropped out. Now is the time to start making your best hits, don't worry about driving defensively, it's time to have some fun!
* I try to hit the other cars just ahead of the front wheels to take out the radiator. * Some good hits to the other guys wheels can take out his drive train. * When you hit another car try to hit squarely, your frame will bend quicker if you hit at an angle. * When you hit another car don't give in to the natural reflex to let off the gas, ease out of the gas slowly so your car won't stall. * Try to keep your drivers side towards your competitors, they are not allowed to hit on the drivers door. * If you can't avoid taking a hit, try to take it on the passenger side doors. This will do the least amount of damage to your car. * When you get hit try to keep your wheels spinning, this will allow your car to slide and therefore inflict less damage. * If you can't avoid a front end collision try to make your competitor hit you squarely. This will do the least damage to your front end. * Try to avoid using your front end for hitting until its down to the last 5 or 6 cars.
Most importantly have fun! If you can't have fun beating the heck out of some old junkers, what can you have fun doing?

A lot of true info here. Too many people get mad and yell because you don't go full speed during the first couple minutes and plow into people; then they say your bagging.. Well DUH..of course not. You don't want to waste your car on another car that is inevitably going to take itself out early. I always take my time during the first couple minutes unless a big shot presents itself. People may say what they wish, but real sand bagging is when you drive slow the ENTIRE time. Strategic driving is when you adjust both hard and soft hits in the correct locations.

I always use a spotter when possible. Someone that can let me know whats going on and what to do while I'm driving. This has to be a person that is willing to run from one end of the track to the other, it should also be someone that isn't drunk. My brother and I have always done this. We use hand signals to let one another know which end of the car to use, if we have a bent axle, or who needs taken out. Keep signals simple, point at your nose for "use the front", point at your butt for "use the back" Point at a wheel and wobble hand side to side for bent axle. Wear something that is easy to see. This has helped me out many times. We also show fingers to let each other know how many cars are left. And thumbs up when there is no one left to worry about.

I still wish derbys would allow in-car wired communications. I don't know why almost all derbys outlaw this?? Then you could talk through a mic in the helmet to your pit guy.

Foot to the floor is always the most fun way to go, but when there is a decent payout it pays to be smart, not sandbag just drive smart.

I take a look behind me to make sure no one is coming, and if its clear I keep pushing towards the wall. You may get them hung up, or if they are stalled against the wall, the next hit is really gonna hurt. And I start out using my front and continue to do so all the way through the derby.

And if there is an imperial in the arena..............and its not you, try to stay within a few feet of him. Or at least know where he is most of the time. I used to stick to the imperials like glue until I started driving them myself.
