[Model Mayhem takes rightful place at Metal Mayhem]
MILFORD, IL/PECATONICA, IL -- With the modeling community building more and more realistic demolition derby cars and the contests swelling with entries, it only makes sense the full-size derby super bowl welcomes their 1:24 scale cousins to the same stage.
Brad Carson, of Milford, Ill. has teamed up with Derby Icons to host 'Model Mayhem,' planned for June 10-11 during Derby Icons' crown jewel event, Metal Mayhem.
Metal Mayhem is a three day event is held in Pecatonica IL, June 10-12.
"This is truly the Super Bowl/Daytona 500 and Woodstock all rolled into one for Demolition Derby Fans and Drivers. The class of cars at this event is un-equaled anywhere else in the nation," reads the Derby Icons.com promotional bump. "Just making the feature is like winning your local feature!"
Model Mayhem will follow the same vein, serving as one of the largest in-person demolition derby model contests in America. Model cars, original work from builders around the country, are due in from Kansas, Ohio, Illinois, New York, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Missouri with the entry list growing daily. Models registration begins at noon Friday (June 10)and will remain open until the green drops over the final qualifying heat that evening. Entries must be back for display by noon Saturday (June 11) with fan voting beginning at 1:00. Voting closes when the green drops over the final heat on Saturday.
A booth will be setup in the vendors paddock. Cars, built to the creator's own personal specs, will be on display and open to the public's critique. Anyone with a day pass to Metal Mayhem can vote, but models cannot be touched or moved.
Entries can be sent to Carson, and he will set them up. Derby Icons and BC Carnage Inc. will not accept responsibility for damage incurred during shipping, during judging, or during setup for the contest at Metal Mayhem.
"People are encouraged to come and turn their car in, and then pick it up at the end of the day," Carson said, reiterating there are no rules for the event. "Most of these contests have some sort of rules. We don't this year. And most contests are done on the Internet, with pictures and a few judges."
That means Mayhem will be common table where many of the builders finally meet face-to-face for the first time. It also means far different interpretations of the cars, as subjectively judged by thousands of derby fans.
"We're doing it in person, with the public as the judges. The cars are being voted on by derby fans from across the country," Carson added. "We'll probably spark a few powder kegs and get more people into the hobby of making the models just by being there."
The innovative contest at Mayhem was attempted in 2010, but didn't get off the ground. Carson took the reigns in December 2010 and began planning; he contacted Tory Schutte through WeCrash.com and received blessings to go forward.
"Tory said I could do it, so long as he didn't have to do a thing with it," Carson said, noting Schutted even kicked in a few t-shirts for the winners. "I'm grateful. I appreciate this opportunity and hope the builders see it as that: an opportunity.
"No one at Derby Icons or Metal Mayhem had to do this for us, so we appreciate it and we want a good turn out. And may the best car win."
