I have always wondered on the tail gate of a truck is it better to leave it in the stock location and weld or to slide it down 3 or 4 inches so its flush with the bottom of the frame. what are your guys in puts cause i might get to run a pick up this year and want it to be as strong as possible....

I would believe moving the tailgate down and welding will help keep the frame rails together better. I've never built a truck before, so just throwing out my thoughts.

I have heard different opinions about this. What seems to work best is dropping the tailgate down flush with the bottom of the frame. Some guys recommend actually removing the rear bumper too to keep you from getting caught up with other trucks, however, I wouldn't do it.

yea i would keep the rear bumper on and attach it to the tail gate with some welds

we have done many things in the past.the best 3 imo, left bumper on and notched tailgate so it slid over frame flush with bottom.then weld everything gate to bed sides, gate to bumper,to frame just weld everything solid. ...junk the bumper drop the gate bolt it to the bumper brackets then weld every seam....my favorite junk bumper install square tube at very rear of frame, fold bed sides (wedge) then fold gate around all of it like a C bolting all the way through ...gate,frame-sq tube, floor, bed sides,gate.....makes a tough battering ram..

Problem with leaving tailgate stock or dropped is above the tire the bed sides will bend in easily. So if I ever build another ( doubt it) I'd set the tail gate on the back side of the wheel arches at an angle, then roll the bed sides over makeing a wedge on the back half of the bed.
