Go for it. After time it adds up. I've had ads on mine for a month and a half or two months and have $41. It depends on the number of views and how many people click on the adds. The views don't give much $$$. Typically like every 40 views is $.01. But if they click the adds that's where the money is made. I've gotten from $.80 a click all the way to $5 for a single click.
Edit: in the time I've had my Adsense account, I've had 7600 views, and 79 clicks to earn that $41.

Its all up and down on pay. Like pipes said above. You get a small percentage based on views, then a higher pay percentage based on clicks to that ad. It also depends on the ad itself, each company pays different amounts for there ads. The more popular your youtube chennel is, then you will get higher paying ads.
There are also 2 styles of being paid by youtube. There is individual monetizations, which mean you will get ads only on your popular videos that get the high enough average views per day or week.
Then there is what you call a youtube partnership. If you become a youtube partner, then everyone of your videos gets ads placed on them no matter how popular they are or arn't. As soon as your video goes online then it gets ads. In order to become a partner you have be rather popular though. The requirments used to be.... 1,000 video views average per day, and must have over 1,000 subscribers. But that was back when I applied for the partnership. Now I believe the requirments are higher to become a partner.
Making money and making a living off youtube takes a LOT of time and effort, but it is possible. Many of those famous youtube channels...thats all they do is make videos and live off the money.
Its rare to hear how much famous youtubers make, so I can't give a real guess to the famous people's profit. The only person I know of that admitted his payments was Davidsfarm. Back when he was a partner on youtube and made car stunt videos and redneck creations, he was earning about $3,000-4,000 a month. Then a bunch of stuff went down about his past, etc, and he was kicked off youtube. He is back on youtube now, but not a partner....yet.
