I once heard a guy say that he would always put his car in neutral (if he could ) when he saw a hard hit coming on the rear of his car.....thus avoiding pressure on the axles.Plus it would do less damage to the car if it was rolling.
Any thoughts on this?

I see how it would save on damage to his car but I don't know about the saving the axle from braking but I've heard of people doing this to.

yea i also can see how it would save damage but idk if it will prevent a broken axle...a well placed shot is still capable of doing it

I think it would help unless they tire shot you then the chance is good to brake I'd think.

its usually too hard for me to have enough self control to take time and remember to hit neutral when i see a car coming...and it takes too much time anyhow...i play offense more then defense while derbying,i figure my car being well built makes up for it ;D

i think the beleif is that if there bumper is pinned onto your wheel and your trying to move more then likely your goin to break something

Never hit the gas while a bumper is pressed against your back rim. Always wait for them to back off or be hit off.

When I first started dy dad told that when he used to run in the 60's and early 70's that he would put the car in nuetral right before contact. That way if the linkage broke he could still get it in the other gear to be able to move. I don't know if it saves axles but I guess anything is worth a try.

i was always told if i was able to react quick enough to hit the brakes if a side shot was coming cause you had a better chance to snap a axle if the tire is spinning while being hit
idk 7+ years running and have yet to have one break( knock on wood) and they have all been 80's GM stock rearends

this is especially true if your running a welded rear end

Broke one last weekend. Ford 31 spline. Broke at the thickest part of axle. Looks like the bearing was bad, had a 1/8in deep dark area where ut looked like it had been cut over time. Will definatly be putting fresh bearings on the next set.
