alrite we'll see how good of snowmobile mechanics are on this site ;D. we got like 6 inches of snow the last couple days so i thought id take my snowmobile out for cruise yesterday since i hadnt driven it in about 2 weeks. my sled is a 1997 arctic cat zr 580 with batteryless efi with about 3300 miles on it and as far as i know nothing has been done to the motor (i bought it last year with 2100 on it and planned on rebuilding it after this year's snow was gone). we put a new stator in it last year which now has about 400 miles on it.
now to the problem: went out to start it and it took off after 3 pulls which it usually does. let it warm up about 7 minutes or so and the temp was right around freezing (btwn 30-33 degrees). well when it was warming up it usually revs itself to about 3500-3700 rpm, but it only went up to 2500 or so. about 5 minutes into it warming up it went down to a 1700 rpm idle, which it usually does once its warm. so then i took it out and drove it around easy for a while cruising back and forth between a stubble field for 10-15 mins. it was running fine in the field had it doing 60-some no problem. well i then came into my yard and turned around and headed back to the field. once i got into the field i let off the throttle and it started to sputter, so i got back on the throttle to keep it from dying. this had no effect and it sputtered like 3 more times and died. tried pulling the rope and nothing, and the first 5 times or so the rope pulled extremely hard. pulled it back home and then the rope pulled easy and it at least tried to start then but still wouldnt fire. its got spark. my dad thinks its not getting gas and could possibly be a fuel pump problem. i talked to a buddy thats going into rec. vehicle tech and he thinks that possibly the pistons expanded too fast and it blew up which would explain why the rope pulled so hard. were gonna do a compression test on it tmr and see what that tells us. any help at all is very much appreciated!!
