Has anyone won any derby's with a factory rear. I have never welded a rear or used spools in 12 years derbying due to fear of losing an axle and have never lost for that reason. In fact I have done quite well. I will only run 70s Impalas or Caprices. I was thinking of doing my first weld this year but hear too many stories of broken axles. I always use really aggressive tires on the back and have never gotten stuck (knock wood). Mini spools sound like a nightmare due to the pin issue and full spools are too expensive in my opinion. Anyone have any luck with welding the spiders in the 10 bolt c clip rears. I have seen all the tips on how to do it but, just am weary of weakening the axles.

My brother took a first and second place last year with the same car with the same 10 bolt c clip. not posi, not welded. We were talking about it the other night and realized that we have never lost a c clip axle unless it was welded. Ever noticed that when someone lose an axle it always sheared off? If it was the clip failing the axle would look ok. just my own experiance, but i will never run a welded c clip again, I would rather go 1 wheel wonder. But having a locker, spool or bolt in axles is optimal

limited slip would be ok not welded but I would not run an open rear. If you weld them right and let them cool you should not have a problem. Most broken axels come from poor driving style. Don't slam shift, and hold brake when taking tire shots or if your wheels come off the ground.

I couldn't see taking the time to take the axles out unless they are bia. If its a 9 inch buy a spool,,,, If its a 12 bolt, sell the axles buy a 9 inch and spool.JMO
