[WeCrashtoo, SM Derby Duplicates team to host May Trash For Cash]
Ft. RECOVERY, OHIO/WATERLOO, NY -- On the heels of a very successful New Year's Eve event, WeCrashToo has scheduled another demolition derby model contest.
Event promoter Jon Hart has scheduled the May Trash for Cash for May 20 & 27, 2011. Deadline is set for 11:59 pm Eastern.
WeCrashToo, online at
WeCrashToo.Proboards.com, is a message board dedicated to demolition derbies. They have just recently begun hosting model contests for derby fans and modeling enthusiasts who twist the model kits into bent heaps, emulating their full-size cousins.
"We're just scratching the surface," said Jon Hart, who won a moderator position on the WeCrashToo staff in the site's inaugural contest. "We've got a good group of builders, and things have been pretty smooth so far."
Hart, a skilled model builder in his own right and no-nonsense kind of guy at the helm of Bandit Motorsports' Model Division, is reknown for his cast resin parts. These parts - battery boxes, wheels, v-treads, fuel cells, Impala bumpers - add authenticity to the cars the hobbyists create.
"So far, it's been good. But if anyone starts crying or complaining, we're not afraid to shut contests down completely," Hart added. "We're pretty fair, and everyone is held to the same standard. We don't play favorites."
It's that straight-forward, even keel that has builders anticipating the new event, Trash for Cash.
Trash for Cash is offering two full size divisions: 77 & older and 77 & Newer, with $25 on the line for the top builer in each catergory. Payout includes everyone in the top five and prizes include items from House of Kolors, Smashed Empire videos and Bandit Motorsports.
The event implements a few new contest twists, including mandatory inspection and an entry rule that will only pay a builder for their highest-placing car.
"Right out of the blocks, we wanted to give everyone a chance to win," Hart said. "We were going to limit the field to just two entries per person. There was some outcry, so we came up with the idea of paying only the top finishing car entered by a given builder."
A builder can enter multiple cars, but if two cars finish in the money, the prize kicks back to the entry behind the second entry. For example, if a contestant's entries place second and fourth, the fourth place prize will go to fifth, and the fifth place prize goes to sixth (provided those contests didn't previously grab prizes).
"It's important to us to spread the wealth and keep people trying and coming back," Hart said. "If we have one guy clean house and take it all, no one will want to come back. And that's not good for the site."
The event was co-conceptualized by Chris Marquart, the promoter of Harvest Havoc at
CrazyJsPlace.Proboards.com. Marquart approached Hart with rules and some prizes and pitched the idea of a May event to Hart the week after Hart's New Years contest ended.
"He was open to it. Once we got the logistics down, we moved pretty fast and tried to capitolize on the momentum the New Years event generated," Marquart said. "We used some pretty loose rules, which was what many of the builders were asking for. I'm looking forward to it."
Scoring for the Trash for Cash will follow the 100-point process used during Harvest Havoc in 2010. There will be no disqualifications and the build guidelines are fairly open. Inspection closes May 20. Cars must be posted there, or they will face a 25 point penalty for being 'late.' The cars will be checked, and then builders will have one week to fix and repost their cars. The second deadline is May 27 at 11:59 pm. Cars still showing rule infractions will be subject to a 15 point penalty for each violation.
Judging will follow, and winners will be announced within a few days of the finish.
"I was impressed with what I saw on New Years, so I'm anxious to see what we get out of this," Hart said.
Any favorites? Hart just laughed.
"We'll see on May 28, right around 12:01 am."
The hunt for sponsors continues, and announcements regarding sponsors and prizes are forthcoming.
