heres a good tip when u go to a derby u hear a lot of cars turning over but some start and some don't, for the ones that don't know how to fix this problem this is what we do, we start our car and get it warm or hot, we get our cars up to around 200 degrees and tune it off if it don't start turn the timing back until it starts thats were u need to be

Yep. Adjusting the timing is a simple great way to make your engine better. Both of my ford engines have adjusted timing to start better under hot conditions.

I get my motors just as hot as I can get them with no water in them and then time them seems to work good for me haven't had an issue yet

I was just wondering How many degrees of base timing would a hot retard be to get it to start? would you want 0° or 10° etc? Any of you guys ever hooked a timing light to check that out what it was?
How much would be too much? would 20° of retard be too much or is 10° more optimal?
I've always done mine by ear.And start heat up and adjust as previously said.I just wanted to know how much of a change is really happening here.
On my Comet I run 8° for a total of 36°

I believe my engines are set to 6-8 degrees timing.

I'm fortunate to live on 5 acres. So we take our cars out back, run them hard and get them good and hot. Tune them up to run great at that temp and then I'm good to go. Plus also lets me give the car a good shakedown. I'd rather have something break out in the back yard than out on the track.
Also should note, I tune my engines with 87 unleaded fuel in the tank, and then run 93+ octane in the derby. 87 is cheaper for tuning purposes, and the 93 helps the engine run better when its colder at first.
