Engine Tips...got any?(for derby engines in general)as they are posted ,any good ones will be added to the main list(with members username who posted them)
One of the best tips i could give would be to power wash the water jacket out....cleaner engine=cooler engine
Remove the thermostat.....and replace with gutted thermostat, washer,or something else that will restrict flow to keep engine cooler.

make sure all wire is intact and out of harms way especially for fuel injected engines. adn make sure they can withstand heat

fresh oil pump, dist cap and rotor, thick plug wires, fresh plugs, and a gutted thermostat will go a long way for a little cash

Take the choke off. It may take a little bit longer to warm up, but its just another thing that likes to get in the way and brake.

if engine has any grease build up on it, make sure you clean it all off the old grease will hold heat and can cause a fire. I also like to use zip ties to keep my plug wires out of harms way. put a small magnet near the drain plug on the oil pan and on the side of the oil filter to collect shavings, especially when breaking in a fresh motor.

i also like to keep my wiring from getting pinched or burnt by using well placed zip-ties, electrical tape and even pieces of garden hose( where wires go through firewall....and another tip, i have always put silicone around the coil and plug wires on the dist. cap(this helps waterproof, and keeps them from popping up off as easy)this can also be used for on electrical plug connections too....for the same reasons I knew a guy who used duct tape on his plug wires one time and it really caused problems with shorts(he used the original type of duct tape that has the metal wires made into the tape...

ive been told you put a high volume oil pump in my engine is this really needed or no? Scott Gropp claims he only puts stock name brand pumps in his engines. I don't know if that is true or not, as I have heard he can mislead people so they don't get a hold of his secrets. I would still say its worth putting in a new one if you never have.

I run my wires and fuel lines through kevlar fabric tubing like they use to cover hydraulic hoses on heavy equipment. Found a huge role in a ware house, works good. Not sure how much it would be to buy but its TUFF.

ive been told you put a high volume oil pump in my engine is this really needed or no? if its a new motor a standard oil pump is all you need,if its got miles on it we use hi volume oil pumps and add an extra quart of oil just in case it doesnt return fast enough(dont want to pump pan dry) and ive always heard a hi pressure pump will wash out bearings

I believe the pan running dry is why Gropp said he doesn't use high volume pump.

Though about 15 or so years of us building our own motors we have figured out that using roll rockers good heads replacing all the springs retainers valves valve guides port and polishing them and steal head gaskets aluminum in take with two barrel. gutting the thermo best and something most people never attempt that i know of is bore out the water jackets with out harming the block.
This is the reason in our area we buy motors from engine builders cause its cheaper to buy one all done and they stand behind there motors My motor from Baldwin Racing
