How much do you want to spend? That will decide if you can get a regular HD camera that records to a hard drive or SD cards, or if you will have to go with a pocket cam. I have a JVC Picsio gc-fm1 HD Pocket cam that shoots 1440x1080 video and like it alot. I'm pretty sure you've seen my videos, but any of the 2010 & 2011 videos are shot with it at www.youtube.com/user/pipesrmylife . I think it's pretty clear, but after seeing some shot with a regular HD camera (not a pocket model) the regular camera would be the way to go if your budget allows. Super super clear, much better than my videos, and OPTICAL ZOOM. That's a big thing to have. Some pocket cameras have it, but most don't. If your stands are far away from the arena, I'd definitely try to get a camera with optical zoom, or the video will turn out grainy and blotchy. Generally I try to stick with name brands when it comes to this type of equipment such as JVC, Sony, Samsung, etc. All make a very good product. I know Mitch (demolition missions) just bought a new HD Toshiba camera, and sounds like he got a pretty good deal on it, so I'd check with him on it. I believe it records to an internal hard drive and has optical zoom. Go to some nearby electronics stores to look at them and test how they feel. Or check the websites of the retailers. Read the customer reviews on the ones you're interested in. An online retailer I've bought a few items from and has pretty good prices is www.newegg.com . A few things to consider: Battery life-how long do your heats, and the whole event last? Would a rechargeable battery last through the whole thing? Some cameras (all the Flip brand ones do) run on AA batteries, which make it easy to keep full charge. Rechargeable batteries are a little tricky unless you get one with super long life. My camera is a rechargeable, but I have 2 external chargers I use to charge the camera between heats to make sure I have enough juice to last through the event. Optical zoom over digital zoom File format the camera records in-do you do video editing? If you do, check the program to see what file types are supported, and try to get a camera that records in one of those supported formats. You can always convert videos between formats, but that is a pain and sometimes you lose video quality. SD card, internal hard drive, or dvd-what the camera records on. I don't have any experience using a camera that has a hard drive or records on dvd's. But in my opinion, the SD card is the way to go. When you're ready to upload, just pop the card out of the camera, insert into a card reader and upload. Simple and doesn't require you to plug the camera in to upload. And finally (again)...what are you willing to spend?

I use a Flip Ultra HD which is 8GB (about 2 hours of video) and runs off of 2 AA batteries. Very convenient, just keep an extra set of fully charged batteries in my pocket and I am good to go. Small enough to take anywhere and keep in the pocket. Only down side is the zoom is limited and the night video can be a bit grainy. Check out videos filmed with it. www.youtube.com/user/All4HimRacingI just purchased a GO-PRO 1080p camera which I plan to use for in car video and maybe some regular stuff too. Plan to play around with it this weekend, just got here in the mail today!

You'll have a wide range of options at that price then. I'm not sure how many reviews they have on newegg for cameras. Price wise they've always been pretty good, so if you find a model you want from a different retailer I'd definitely check out newegg for a price before you buy. Sounds like your average derby length is very similar to mine. I don't know if my camera would survive the whole derby or not on a single charge. Once the battery icon goes down to one mark (has 3 when fully charged), which is usually between the heat and consi, or consi and feature, I plug in my external charger to give it some more juice during the intermission just to ensure I can record the whole thing then without having to leave out the ending because the camera died. Funeralhome7 has some EXCELLENT quality videos on his channel, and one video I ran across someone asked what camera he was using, but can't remember what it was. I'd try to get ahold of him on there and see what camera he has and price.
I considered Flip cameras like engineerguy has. Great camera (I've used them for a couple college projects). Since they run on AA batteries that would be awesome for recording derbies. That would be the one thing I wish I could change with my JVC camera. The reason I didn't go with a Flip is that you don't have expandable storage (doesn't use an SD card). I'm glad I didn't go that route because most events I've been to I've filled up an 8 GB card, and about half of a 4 GB card. But I will agree they are very convenient and handy. Easy to store, and use.
Since you said you need something with good zoom and that's good at night, if I were you I would go with a regular HD camera instead of a pocket HD cam. I'll be getting a regular HD camera the next time I need one over a pocket model. I'd check with Mitch about his Toshiba he just got-after I read some of the details about it he posted on Facebook I would have easily bought the same camera if I was looking for one. I'll do some looking early next week on some models (leaving for vacation tomorrow) and post them here.

funeral home7 the kind of camera he uses is shown of his channel and its like $1000-$1500 if i had that kind of money i would get it. he uses a Sony HDRXR520V 240GB High-Definition Hard Disk Drive Camcorder
