Got home from work a little bit ago to find water seaping up from the ground near the street. I called the water department and on of their guys came out to look at it. He said that there is a break between the shut off valve and the main which is in the middle of the street,, he then told me I was responsible for it. I want to know if I am,, the shut off valve is located between the city sidewalk and the street so the break is not on my property. Any help would be greatly appreciated,,I need water asap and I'm sure digging up the city sidewalk and street will not be cheap.

I believe that you are only responsible for the line from your meter to your house. That is how it is here in California. I'm not sure about where you live, but you would think that from the meter to the main city water system belongs to the city and from the meter to your house belongs to you.

I found a website with our city orinances,,, the city is only responsible for the main . Even though the break is not on my property and the city more than likely installed the supply line and shut off valve many years ago. I understand the work that needs to be done, and I could get the equipment and fix it myself if I was a liscensed plumber. But I'm not so I guess I will have to pay someone that is. Well it is deffinatley my problem,, I don't own anything past the sidewalk except that pipe. City of Dixon really sucks. Found a plumber that would have fixed the problem for under $1000 but the city will not turn the water off at the main so the road has to be dug up to get to the next valve and I have to pay for all of it. BS Talked to a former alderman and found out that about 10 years ago Dixon started having problems with this,,,, So they were nice enough to pass an ordinance giving ownership of everything but the main to the homeowners. Saves them a bunch of money not fixing stuff they installed.

Insurance does not cover because it is not on the insured property, They got most of the work done today other than patching in the road. Gonna cost around 3 Gs. Could think of so many better ways to spend that money.
