A little frustrated today. After all that work getting that motor in the front clip back on and everything up front welded up and ready to proceed to the cage and the rear of the car. I got the oil changed and the tranny cooler put in and the shifter in today, Fired up the old beast to hear the thunder, and see if it would move and I got oil pouring out the back of the engine out the bottom of the bell housing. I'm thinkin rear seal or hopefully not something worse. I let my buddy use this motor last sept. and had it catch on fire on him. it was an oil fire on the pass side of the car. The oil filter had a hole in it so thats what we thought it was. Evidently maybe it was something else. So now back to tearing stuff apart. I have another good running 318 i may just unbolt this one from the tranny and drop in the other one that seems like the easiest solution. Anyway I'm pretty much just venting. I still have 4 months til the derby I'm building this car for so I got plenty of time.

Damn it, seems like that kind of $hit always happens to me the night before a derby. Last year my brother and I were up for 48 hours before Bash for Cash in ohio,,, then we had a 7 1/2 hour drive straight into teching our cars then driving straight on the track. All over stupid things that were overlooked due to exhaustion. At least you have time,, but it always sucks.

Your right it does seem like this stuff always happens right before, Year before last I was getting ready to button things up on saturday for the derby the next day, last minute details you know. I fired up the car and put in reverse to move it back away from the gate so I could bring it around to the garage. The tranny started slipping a little so I reved it up to get it to engage. But come to find out that was the least of my worries, When it engaged it shot backwards, I hit the brakes and they went straight to the floor. Didnt even slow down. reached up to shut it down and throw it in park but by that time it was to late. Over the bank through the fence and into the field behind my house. Not a little bank either, about 6 or 7 foot drop with the fence at the bottom. Needless to say I was a little frustrated that time also. But I got it all fixed differant tranny and master cylinder all in time for the derby, but what a ride. The kids that were playin in the field ran over and were " wow that was the coolest thing ever!" It was pretty funny.

Haven't been doin to much on the car this past week. Been pretty busy with work and all. And next week I'll be flying out to Tennessee for the week for some training for work so wont get anything done till the week after next. Just wanted to keep everyone up to speed on my build. Thanks for reading and all the feedback and helpful hints. Its stuff like this that will help keep this sport alive.

The motor that I will be replacing the 318 with I thought was a 360 but I was told by my buddies dad that it is also a 318, He said it doesn't have the right harmonic balancer to be a 360. Any way the one in the car now is a 2bbl carb and it starts everytime even when hot. The other one has a 4bbl and when it gets hot it will die and not start back up till it cools a little. It has ran in 6 derbies. So to cut this kinda short, I was thinking that while it is out of the car I was going to tear it down and replace all the gaskets on the top of the motor and replace the 4 bbl with a 2bbl intake and carb. is there anything else besides the timing chain set that I should do while its apart? I am on a very small/tight budget. Lets say I really dont even have a budget. Any advice would be great. I'm not much of a mechanic but I can follow directions well. Thanks in advance.

Back workin on the beast. I got the other motor torn down, cleaned up and got my parts from summit the other day. So I'm ready to start putting it all back together. I also got the cage almost done. Today I'll work on getting the bad motor unbolted and ready to come out. I'll post some more pics later.

Thanks Guys, I apreciate it. You like those headers huh, not bad for home made. we'll see how they sound. I'll be trying to get as much done as I can in the next week and a half. I'm having a double hernia repair on the 14th of this month. So i'll be out of commision for at least a month. the derby is on June 19th. so by the time I'm released from my Dr that wont give me much time to get ready. Anyway I hope I'll be ready to drive by then. I dont want to push it either and screw things up worse.
